The House of Representatives in Nigeria has approved President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s tax reform bills following months of heated debate.
Sunday Dare, the presidential spokesperson and Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications, announced the approval in a statement via his official X account on Thursday.
While he did not provide specific details, Dare confirmed that the bills were passed by the Green Chamber after extensive discussions.
“Today, March 13, 2025, the House of Representatives in Abuja has approved the tax reform bills,” he stated.
This decision comes amid ongoing controversy regarding Tinubu’s tax reform proposals, which have faced significant opposition in recent months.
Notably, the Northern Nigeria Governors’ Forum has expressed its disapproval, particularly concerning the proposed value-added tax derivation model included in the Nigeria Tax Bill. Additionally, the National Economic Council has also voiced its opposition to the tax derivation model.
On October 3, 2024, Tinubu submitted four tax reform bills to the National Assembly. These included the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, the Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill.
