MTN Enters Roaming Agreement with 9Mobile

MTN Nigeria has finalized a three-year national roaming agreement with 9Mobile, enabling subscribers of the smaller operator to utilize MTN’s network infrastructure nationwide. This information was disclosed in a notice released on Monday, signed by the company secretary, Uto Ukpanah.

The agreement, which has received approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), aims to enhance coverage for 9Mobile customers, particularly in regions where the operator’s infrastructure is limited.

This development signifies a notable change in the competitive landscape of Nigeria’s telecommunications sector, where discussions about infrastructure sharing have been common but rarely executed on this scale.

“This agreement marks a significant advancement in our commitment to fostering industry collaboration, enhancing customer experience, and supporting the NCC’s vision of a fully connected Nigeria,” stated MTN Nigeria CEO Karl Toriola. “To provide the necessary scale for telecommunications services in Nigeria, strong collaboration among the private sector, public sector, and long-term investors is essential. This agreement showcases what can be achieved through collaboration, and we are thrilled to announce it today after months of preparation.”

9Mobile customers have frequently voiced concerns over ongoing network issues, leading many to switch to competing providers. As of January 2025, the company’s active subscriber base had dwindled to 3.2 million, a significant drop from over 22 million at its peak in 2016, according to NCC data.

In recent years, the NCC has advocated for infrastructure sharing to minimize duplication, reduce costs, and enhance access in rural areas. MTN stated that this agreement aligns with its broader objectives of promoting digital inclusion and fostering sustainable growth in the industry.
