The Sokoto State Government is to embark on massive construction of tube wells for farmers to avoid drought.
The Project Manager, Sokoto Agricultural Development Project, Abubakar Malami, said so in an interview with Daily Trust.
He said that this was based on a projection that the state might experience drought this year due to the shortage of water.
Malami noted that there was insufficient water in the dams to support all-year-round farming across the state.
“Our dams are not filled to capacity, this is what ignited our fear for imminent drought in the state,” he stated
The SADP boss added: “It is in view of this that Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has directed us to construct tube wells for farmers across the state and provide them with pumping machines at a subsidised amount.”
He said that the state government had purchased enough fertiliser and improved seeds for dry- season farming.
“We have taken adequate measures to ensure that the commodities are not diverted and have reached all the farmers, no matter their locations, in the state,” he added.
