Minister inaugurates governing boards of agencies to drive policy formulation

The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Okechukwu Enelamah, said that the role of governing boards of parastatal agencies was to drive the general policy formulation for implementation by the management teams of such agencies.
Enelamah said this at the inauguration of the governing boards of agencies under the Ministry, on Thursday, in Abuja.
He said the objective of the boards was to provide policy guidelines, approve operational targets and ensure efficient management of resources to achieve the set targets of various parastatals and agencies.
“You (Boards) are expected to work closely with the management of the Ministry for overall policy directives and guidance.
You are also expected to ensure clear understanding of your roles and responsibilities, as well as those of other parties.
“It is crucial that the objectives and philosophies of your agencies and parastatals are clearly understood and carefully communicated to avoid conflict or misconception.
“It is important that you leave the management of your parastatals and agencies to run the day-to-day affairs of their organisations without
undue disruption or interference,” Enelamah said.
He said the boards were not expected to be involved directly in the day-to-day management of the parastatals and agencies.
The minister urged the boards to work in harmony with the ministry and management of various agencies to ensure that the goals set for the organisations were achieved.
He said to further ensure stronger partnership, it was imperative that all parties were conversant with the requisite operational guidelines and apply them judiciously in the management of the organisations.
Enelamah said it was expected that the boards’ experience, skills and vision would add great value to the Ministry and the economy of the nation.
He said that, “we have no doubt that your
leadership will help boost our economic diversification efforts, create jobs and generate wealth for our people.
Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Commerce, Stevenster Ogbaga, pledged the committee’s support to enable the boards to achieve their objectives.
Chairman Senate Committee on Commerce, Mohammed Sabo, said the committee would give the boards every necessary support to achieve their target.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that various governing Boards were inaugurated, including Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority; Consumer Protection Council; SON, Oil and Gas Free Trade Zone Authority.
Others were Nigeria Investment Promotion Council; National Automotive
Design and Development Council, as well as Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria.
