Nigeria has seen a notable decrease in its headline inflation for June, dropping to 22.22%, down from 22.97% in May 2025.
This information comes from the latest Consumer Price Index and Inflation Report released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Wednesday.
This new figure indicates a month-on-month decline of 0.75% in Nigeria’s overall inflation rate. However, food inflation has risen slightly, reaching 21.97% in June compared to 21.14% in the previous month.
This marks the fifth consecutive month that Nigeria’s inflation rate has declined since the Consumer Price Index was updated in January 2025. Despite these promising statistics from the NBS, many Nigerians are still facing high prices for goods and services.
Economists and financial analysts, including Okechukwu Unegbu, the former President of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, have raised concerns about the apparent gap between the NBS’s reported data and the everyday experience of consumers. “The general inflation is underreported, maybe due to political reasons,” Unegbu stated in an interview.
Additionally, the Central Bank of Nigeria is set to convene its 301st Monetary Policy Committee meeting on July 21st and 22nd to evaluate the nation’s interest rate, currently at 27.50%.
In contrast, inflation rates in both the United States and the United Kingdom rose by 0.3% in June 2025, reaching 2.7% and 3.6% respectively.
