MTN Nigeria Proposes 100% Increase in Call and Data Tariffs

Karl Toriola, the Chief Executive of MTN Nigeria, has announced that the telecommunications company has submitted a proposal to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) seeking a 100% increase in service tariffs.

Toriola made this statement during an interview on Arise TV on Thursday.

He noted, however, that it is uncertain whether the NCC, the regulatory body for telecommunications, will approve the proposed increase due to the ongoing economic challenges in the country.

“We have submitted requests for approximately 100% tariff increases to the regulators. I am skeptical that they will approve such a significant rise, as they are very attuned to the current economic climate,” Toriola remarked.

This announcement comes amid growing speculation about a potential increase in telecom service tariffs in Nigeria this year

Gbenga Adebayo, the Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), recently warned that operations could be suspended if tariffs are not increased. In response, telecom subscribers have firmly opposed any plans to raise tariffs..
