The official opening ceremony took place on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at 21 Rue de la Paix, Paris, France, and was officiated by the Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun.
The establishment of Zenith Bank, Paris, a Third-Country Branch (TCB) of Zenith Bank (UK) Limited, a subsidiary of Zenith Bank Plc, marks a significant milestone in the bank’s global expansion strategy and highlights its dedication to serving clients in Europe.
Notable attendees at the event included His Excellency AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Governor of Kwara State and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF); His Excellency Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Governor of Lagos State; His Excellency Adedapo Abiodun, CON, Governor of Ogun State; His Excellency Dr. Peter Mbah, Governor of Enugu State; Abdul Samad Rabiu, GCON, Chairman of BUA Group; Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, Honourable Minister of State for Finance; Aisha Rimi, Chief Executive Officer/Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC); and Nonye Ayeni, Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC). They joined Zenith Bank executives in celebrating this important achievement, which underscores the bank’s commitment to providing exceptional financial solutions and promoting economic growth worldwide.
In her welcome address, Dame (Dr.) Adaora Umeoji, OON, Group Managing Director/Chief Executive of Zenith Bank, expressed gratitude to the Founder and Chairman, Dr. Jim Ovia, CFR, for his vision in establishing an award-winning brand. She elaborated on the strategic rationale behind the bank’s move to Paris, stating, “The opening of this branch is part of our broader strategy to extend our presence in major global financial centers and to support our customers’ businesses. The Paris branch will enhance our ability to serve clients and strengthen trade and financial relationships between our customers in France and other nations. Zenith Bank’s expansion into France is particularly strategic, as Nigeria accounts for 20% of France’s trade with Sub-Saharan Africa, according to the Franco-Nigeria Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI). Having successfully established a strong presence in Anglophone Africa, we aim to leverage our Paris operations to penetrate the Francophone market, starting with Ivory Coast and Cameroon, where we plan to set up subsidiaries soon. This will facilitate business and trade flows between Africa and France, a key partner for many African nations.”
During the ceremony, Mr. Wale Edun, the Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, remarked, “The opening of Zenith Bank in Paris is a testament to the trust we are building for Nigerian institutions globally. Zenith’s presence here will foster trust within the French business community, allowing them to explore opportunities in Africa and facilitating their entry into Nigeria. We are delighted to be part of this historic occasion.”
Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President and Chief Executive of Dangote Group, congratulated Zenith Bank on this significant achievement, stating, “I want to commend Zenith Bank for this milestone. Without institutions like Zenith Bank and other Nigerian banks, our group would not have reached its current position, as no country can thrive without a robust banking sector.”
Bertrand Dumont, Director General of the Treasury, France, noted, “This branch is a vital asset for business relations between our two countries and continents. I wish you success in this endeavor and hope to be invited back soon to celebrate further achievements.”
Mr. Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, CFR, Chairman of the France-Nigeria Business Council (FNBC), reflected on the significance of the occasion, saying, “Fifteen years ago, Dr. Jim Ovia welcomed me to the UK as the CEO of Access Bank. Today, I proudly welcome Zenith Bank to Paris. This intentional leadership and collaboration exemplify the mission of the France-Nigeria Business Council. On behalf of the French people, I extend a warm welcome to Zenith – Bonne Arrivée!”
