Lagos State Government is taking decisive action to enhance fire safety in markets across the state. This move comes in response to a recent fire outbreak at Dosunmu market on Lagos Island, prompting Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to conduct an on-the-spot assessment and issue directives for stringent safety measures.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, under Governor Sanwo-Olu’s directive, is spearheading an extensive plan to reinforce fire safety standards in markets. Deputy Director of Public Affairs, Ololade Agboola, emphasized the collaboration of relevant government agencies responsible for building control and permits to enforce safety protocols.
Director Margaret Adeseye outlined the proposed measures, including the appointment and training of Fire Safety Marshals, mandatory provision of fire extinguishers in shops, inspection and maintenance of electrical wiring, proper storage procedures, and installation of fire detection and suppression systems. Additionally, regulations on generator placement and fuel storage, oversight on combustible materials, and a whistleblower mechanism for reporting violations are being implemented.
Governor Sanwo-Olu directed the Ministry of Physical Planning and permit agencies to crack down on non-compliant structures, expressing zero tolerance for endangering lives. He condemned the placement of generators on rooftops and higher floors, especially in residential buildings.
Following the recent Dosunmu market fire, which caused extensive damage, Governor Sanwo-Olu ordered its closure until safety assessments are completed. Investigations into the cause of the fire have been initiated to prevent future incidents. He admonished the practice of converting residential apartments into storage for hazardous materials, pledging accountability for flouting safety standards.
Furthermore, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized mandatory integrity tests for standing structures and vowed to demolish unapproved buildings. The commitment to safety and order in markets remains unwavering, with both immediate and long-term support measures discussed with victims and stakeholders.
