The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, Mr Bitrus Nabasu says the Federal Government has planned to utilize science and technology to grow the economy and make it competitive.
Nabasu stated this at the opening ceremony of the 17th National Council on Science and Technology conference in Awka on Tuesday.
He said the Federal Government would tap into the human and natural resources of the country to improve the quality of lives of the citizens.
The permanent secretary urged participants at the conference to deliberate intensively on decisions that would improve the lives of the average Nigerian citizen and spur them to appreciate the relevance of science to societal development.
“You are expected to bring your wealth of experience to bear as the Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) sector is the driver of other sectors of the Nigerian economy.
“For Nigeria to be rated highly among the comity of nations, the utilization of STI is essential,” he added.
He expressed hope that the deliberations and decisions to be reached at the conference would help Nigeria transform from a resource-based to a knowledge and innovation-driven economy.
Earlier, Mrs Pauline Nwandu, the Permanent Secretary of the Anambra Ministry of Tertiary education, Science and Technology, said that the decisions reached at the conference would be central in the implementation of roadmap policy.
